After a week in three cities in Croatia in September three of the panelists parted ways: one went on to do some wine stomping in Spain a week later while another jetted off to Slovenia, then two reunited in time for a quick stop to Germany into October, but the same three panelists then reunited in Vienna on 14 October for a whirlwind 4-day visit.
This included vineyard tours on the outskirts of the city where a Truffle Market was discovered and included some fantastic pizza, schnitzel, burger and fine-dining experiences in and around Vienna.
A highlight of our visit to Austria was stumbling upon Leo Hillinger Wineshop & Bar on Wollzeile 25 in Vienna. I just wish we had more time as they even offer food pairings like an amazing-looking Beef Tartar and culinary delights that are paired with some of the Hillinger wines. The wine menu descriptions are key and detailed, though the team are eager to help in your choices and there is a great variety with white wines priced between 3.80 and 5.20 a glass and red wines priced from 4.40 to 6.70 a glass – much better value and taste than some of the many wines we tried in Croatia – although Monika’s Wine Bar in Split was almost as personable.
The fresh and beautifully-lit interior of Leo Hillinger Wineshop & Bar (complete with fresh flowers and candlelight) complements the friendly service for a lovely night out with friends. There’s also 2 gin interesting variations to try – the London style versus Buenos Aires style which are refreshing if you’re wined out!
After deciding on this award and a quick online check, I had a look at the website https://www.leo-hillinger.com/en/ and see that Leo Hillinger is actually a well-known entrepreneur with the slogan ‘more than wine’, so it was interesting to see that the fine experience we encountered is just one element of many cool ventures.
