2022 Top 5 Winner: MEDITERRANEO, Hvar, Croatia

Croatia is a bucket-list destination for many, especially after Game of Thrones made some of the city sights a must-see destination to fans and we noticed mostly American visitors in the narrow city streets of Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar.

The days of being known as an affordable destination are however over, and with Croatia set to lose its local currency to the Euro in January 2023, prices seem set to increase further.

You rarely get a great quality main course for under 20 euros in Croatia’s 3 main tourism cities, but this Thacks Awards winner offers amazing homemade pastas in that price range. We were welcomed with some lovely grappa, bread, a seven year aged balsamic vinegar and olive oil (on the house)!

Atmosphere:
Romantic, cozy, welcoming, calm between some historic buildings near the marina and narrow walkways of Hvar city.

Service:
Igor was our waiter who really went above and beyond and provided us with exceptional service. His wine knowledge was impressive and he was able to explain in detail the different Croatian cultivars and wines on their wine list.
He was very attentive and really made our evening extra special.

Food:
Wowwww! I had the best mushroom soup ever. Their charcuterie and cheese board starter was excellent, the prosciutto was next level, so was the wild boar sausage. My seafood risotto was spectacular, such fresh seafood and the dish was so enjoyable.
The steaks, although the pricier option, were exquisitely presented and dry-aged.

Prices:
Having looked at what other restaurants in Hvar are charging, the prices here are quite reasonable. The delicious mushroom soup was under €6 and the tasty seafood risotto was under €20.
I had a disappointing shrimp risotto at Hula Hula nearby the previous day for €18, and in comparison this was much tastier and beautifully presented. The Tastes of Dalmatian meat and cheese board was a reasonable €14.

We ended off the evening with some more grappa, again on the house which was such a lovely touch. The staff make you feel like royalty and this fine establishment deserves their Thacks Award.
