Impodimo Game Lodge is a luxury lodge in South Africa’s fifth largest reserve, Madikwe Game Reserve. Remote and unspoilt, nestled in the northwest part of South Africa, on the Botswana border (about 3.5 hours drive from Johannesburg), Impodimo is one of a few unfenced lodges, meaning wild animals can (and do) roam freely.
We had an elephant visit the boma, a buffalo block the path to our bungalow, a lion roaring beneath the window of our (thankfully elevated) bungalow at midnight on our first night, and a pack of wild dogs chase and kill a kudu meters from the car parking area. And we hadn’t even ventured on one of the two daily game drives yet, which were led by expert indigenous trackers, where we saw all the big five including a leopard kill – a once in a lifetime experience.
Impodimo lodge is all inclusive, with accommodation, meals and game drives all included in the price. On the topic of meals, I’ve had some of the best steaks anywhere in the world at Impodimo lodge. Maybe it’s because the northwest province of South Africa is known for its quality beef cattle. Impodimo is one of the few big-five reserves that is in a malaria free area, making it a particularly attractive destination if you have children because no antimalarial medicines are needed.
And finally price: Impodimo is a fraction of the price of the more exclusive Kruger National Park private lodges but for comparable big game viewing, luxury accommodation, and a great overall gastronomical experience. -bm
