
At the top of a staircase, off Cape Town’s foodie street (Bree street), sits an oasis of relaxed chic.
Here the truism “less is more” applies, since they don’t stock everything, but the wines they do stock are thoughtfully curated by expert sommeliers: some bottles rare and hard to find.
Simply put, you can’t go wrong with any choice in this bespoke wine bar. Two added bonuses are excellent value for money wine tastings, at a fraction of international prices; and staff that truly love what they do. South African wines are among the best in the world, especially the Chenin Blanc and Pinotage (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault) cultivars. South African wines are also exceptionally good value.
Three of the Thacks Awards panelists popped into Culture Wine Bar following a whirlwind foodie tour of Cape Town, a few hours prior to a flight back to Europe – and we were so glad we did… we ended up tasting five amazing local wines and taking in the sunny atmosphere here. A special shout out to Culture’s sommeliers, whose expertise, advice and infectious enthusiasm guided our choices and made our experience so worthwhile. -bm
