A 30 hour Irish Assignment: Guinness and Chipper Food at the cliffs of Ballycotton – PART I

“I see the cliffs!”

The greatest thing about living in Europe is that budget airlines exist – so you can find a return flight to another country less than 3 hours away for under €60.

You can fly to Venice for a day to fill up on genuine pasta, or skip over to Morocco for a few hours to smoke a shisha in a carpet shop… or you could dash over to Ireland for 30 hours to check out the ‘The Trawler Boyz’ dubbed in a recommendation to Thacks Awards as ‘honest to god the best Irish chipper food I’ve ever experienced’ – and squeeze in a whiskey tour in Midleton.

Thacks Awards headquarters approached panelist John:

‘John, are you up for a special weekend assignment?! We’re looking for local gems and see that you’re a 2 hour 45 minute flight from Cork in Ireland?! A collaborator Maria Lynch, an Irish local, says the town of Ballycotton is worth going to just to taste ‘the best Irish chipper food I’ve ever experienced’.

First, what is chipper food? Where is Ballycotton? Can we squeeze in a cliff walk if Maria says Ballycotton has one? She also said the Knockadoon cliff walk is off the beaten track and you HAVE to do it!

With a budget of just over €200, John jumped at the challenge…

“I can get a return flight for €58 to Cork in Ireland from Spain, I got an Opel Astra hire-car with fully comp insurance for €70 for 24 hours, so can head to the Blackbird Pub where Trawler Boys have their ‘Irish chipper food’ to try it – with a Guinness of course – and I found a stunning en suite bedroom at a wedding venue for €80 using a genius discount, AND I can book a whiskey distillery tour in Midleton on Sunday after I’ve seen Knockadoon.

Tick tick tick tick tick and tick! Challenge accepted!!”
