2023 Top 3 Winner: THE CURRY CLUB, Cape Town, South Africa

From the moment I stepped into The Curry Club, I was overwhelmed by the aromatic fragrances from the Punjabi spices that began seducing my nose-buds.

Warm and welcoming

Punjabi cuisine has its origins in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan, and it is known for its rich and flavorful dishes. Punjabi curries are typically less hot than other regional curries and are more focused on aromatics and flavour rather than heat.

Flavours and great appeal

The standout dishes I had were the butter chicken and the wild mushroom curry.

The butter chicken was a perfect example of a Punjabi-style curry. The sauce was creamy and rich with a mild heat, allowing the aromatic spices to shine through. The chicken was perfectly cooked and tender.

The vegetarian wild mushroom curry we shared was another great example of a Punjabi cooking. It was rich and earthy, with a subtle heat that didn’t overpower the flavor of the mushrooms. The spices were well balanced, allowing the natural flavor of the mushrooms to remain the star of the dish.

Order a few dishes to compare and enjoy

The accompaniments were equally impressive. The garlic naans were perfectly soft and chewy, while the cheese naans were a deliciously indulgent treat, without being heavy or oily.

The poppadoms were crispy and light, and the fresh sambals of diced onion tomatoes and herbs, added a refreshing touch to the meal. And let’s not forget the deep fried chickpea battered spinach leaves – a unique and tasty appetizer that I highly recommend.

The service at The Curry Club was exceptional, with the staff being friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and was a great help in advising us about the various dishes avaliable.

Portions are generous and very good value. At about R190 ($10) average per person for a meal, our tummies were happy and very full!

Great value menu options

Overall, The Curry Club is definitely worth a visit if you’re a fan of Indian cuisine. The food is exceptional quality and excellent value. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service is superb.
