Recently I visited Argentina for less than 3 weeks and although the foodie scene in Palermo (Buenos Aires) is very impressive, Namida is one of the few restaurants I frequented more than once in my too-short visit. They got my 1st Thacks Award for 2022.
The venue and decor was delightfully crisp and although Namida has been around for a while (their Facebook page is active and thriving too), the unassuming and fresh-looking small venue with a friendly co-owner in front-of-house seems to have been consistently serving up amazing sushi with his chef team visibly hard at work.
But don’t just stop at sushi – their ‘MINIDISHES’ menu is a winner with the meatiest ‘SUPER MEAT ROLLS’ spring rolls ever; and their prawns and gyozas left us wanting more. Which was why we went back! And we weren’t disappointed. The flavours and ingredients were fresh and the value for money was perfect and they offer a lunch time discount. Our only minor non-smile moment was their set menu for lunch on their online menu on our 2nd visit was perhaps outdated (and different to the Spanish one we found afterwards), so when we explained that we thought we were having their lunch special when the bill arrived, they were very apologetic and offered us complimentary desserts! And they instantly updated the oversight which was obviously unintentional.
The creativity and flavour of everything we ate rivalled some amazing Sushi of a popular 2021 Thacks Awards winner in South Africa: so who would have thought that Argentina and South Africa can take their sushi offerings this seriously (when they do also both offer great steaks as keen beef producers!). So skip the steaks of Buenos Aires and visit Namida instead. Another 2022 winner in Mendoza (a wine bar called ‘Vinobien’) actually had amazing tapas portions of fillet steaks which were the best we had in Argentina; but Namida served up amazing meals and was a favourite in Buenos Aires.
At Namida we highly recommend the golden crisply and fresh-tasting tempura prawns and the juicy gyozas – so it’s certainly not all about the sushi. Everything was delicious! And the wine recommendation was perfect too.
