Road Tripping

Getting away from rain clouds.

THAT time:

When you go to Zurich for 39 hours with 4 besties from 3 countries, see 4 countries – set foot in 3 of them and have 2 picnics in 2 of them – with a lunch in Liechtenstein.

I bought a Swiss chocolate on the plane, landed, checked into the hotel which homes the biggest wine fridge (wine tower) you could imagine. It looked like a lit up green tower filled with hundreds of bottles from the room many storeys up.

After a lovely gourmet dinner at Andre and Christoff’s beautiful apartment in Zurich, we had an early start as I hired my dream wheels for 24 hours. The catch was that my dream wheels is a convertible (obviously!) and there was rain forecast all around Zurich and Mount Titlis which was Plan A for ‘driving over Swiss mountains in a new Merc’.

Plan B ended up being much more spontaneous…:

A day before our travels, Franzi and Sonja, our German friends, said they’d love to see us too. So, with the wind in our hair (and ears) we drove to Lake Constance which borders Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Franzi (and her dog-child Ella) had met us there from Stuttgart and picked Sonja up along the way. Franzi had driven from Nuremberg the day before!

We enjoyed the first of our picnics as the clouds rolled in, so opted to clearer skies over Liechtenstein next. We got lost up a mountain, made a U-turn and got to Liechtenstein when I drove through a mountain tunnel for almost a minute and entered a fairy-tale emerald colour landscape with the bluest lake and cow bells clanging as cows ran down the hills before winter (I almost thought I saw Heidi behind a bush!) … After a traditional lunch with a beer, we had picnic number two with desserts and said farewell to the girls as we headed back to Zurich over more winding roads – and Andre being the best tour guide across borders, past vineyards, gin shops and cloudy scenes to the lake in Zurich.

Take me back to that greenery with friends’ scene for a picnic in my dreams!!

A day seeing 4 countries with 4 besties and a dog…
